Lurö archipelago

Explorer tour

In the extension of Värmlandsnäs and out into Lake Vänern all the way to Västergötland lies one of Sweden’s most magnificent freshwater archipelagos. Hundreds of islands, of different sizes and characteristics, form a cohesive island world here between Lake Vänern’s large basins, Lake Värmlandsjön and Lake Dalbosjön. The entire archipelago is a nature reserve.

The archipelago is the largest in Lake Vänern and consists of countless large islands and islets that offer a wide variety of wild and beautiful archipelago environments. The Lurö archipelago has a long and exciting history and with a little luck (and the right weather) we can visit various lighthouses, a remnant of an old seaside tavern whose cherry grove still thrives, an old church ruin from the 12th century on Lurö itself and an old and well-preserved fishing settlement on the island of Vithall.

If you are interested in birds, there are many nesting seabirds and, among others, white-tailed eagles and ospreys to see. In spring and autumn, the Lurö archipelago is a popular resting place for various waders and other birds on their way through. The flora is very special on some islands and there is also much to discover there. On some of the islands, old pastures have been restored and now cows and sheep graze there again.

The paddle tour starts from Ekenäs harbour where there is a shop and restaurant, guest harbour and campsite. Together we carry the kayaks down to the water and familiarise ourselves with the kayak and other equipment. Then we paddle at a leisurely pace out of Ekenäsviken and out into the archipelago. The route is determined by wind and weather and there is always much to discover and a magical landscape that offers beautiful views. The destination for the paddle is Vithall with its old, picturesque fishing village and Gunnarsholmen lighthouse. We make a beach break at a suitable place and enjoy a delicious meal consisting of smoked trout from the archipelago together with other local produce. Coffee, tea and non-alcoholic drinks are included. Those who are keen on swimming can take a dip. The tour itself takes approximately 5.5 hours including lunch. The tour includes a guide, kayak, life jacket and all other paddle equipment, food and drinks. What to bring: comfortable clothes, change of clothes, swimwear, rain jacket, light shoes, sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and water bottle.
